About This Item

New York: Random House, 1966. First printing. Near fine in very good jacket.. Association copy of this first edition published during Johnson's White House tenure - inscribed to advisor Harald Saunders. Saunders was a member of the National Security Council staff from 1961 through Johnson's tenure as President. He subsequently served as Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs from 1978 to 1981 and was intrumental in both the Camp David Accords as well as the Iranian hostage crisis. Johnson was something of a reluctant signer and books genuinely inscribed by him are uncommon, with many secretarial examples misidentified. A warm association. Original blue cloth. Jacket lightly edgworn with some tearing. Scuff to spine. Some shelfwear to book extremities. Inscribed by Lady Bird Johnson to ffep: "To Harold Saunders / with our appreciation and best wishes, / Lady Bird Johnson / Christmas 1966." Additionally signed by President Johnson beside his wife's signature.
