About This Item

Oxford, England: Osprey Military, Osprey Publishing Ltd, 2001. First printing Thus [stated]. Trade paperback. Fair. Tony Bryan. 100, [2] pages plus covers and color plate inserts. Illustrations. Glossary. Select Bibliography. This item has gotten wet at the bottom edge and has some staining and rippling. Pages are separate and legible. Philip Katcher was educated at the University of Maryland and served in the US Army in Vietnam. He has also been an active participant in living history activities, especially in the 18th and 19th century periods. He has written a number of books on various periods of US military history and presently is editor/publisher of Military Images Magazine. Philip Katcher has written over 20 titles in the Men-at-Arms Series including the highly successful five-volume set on Armies of the American Civil War. Tony Bryan has worked as a freelance illustrator for many years, after initially qualifying in Engineering and working for a number of years in Military Research and Development. Tony has a keen interest in military hardware - armour, small arms, aircraft and ships - and has produced many illustrations for partworks, magazines and books, including a number of titles in the New Vanguard series. This book combines New Vanguard 38: American Civil War Artillery 1861-65 (1) Field Artillery and New Vanguard 40: American Civil War Artillery 1861-65 (2) Heavy Artillery. Perhaps the most influential arm of either army in the prosecution of the American Civil War, the artillery of both sides grew to be highly professional organizations. Because of the length of the coastline of the United States, from the beginning American ordnance placed an emphasis on its Heavy Artillery mounted in coastal defenses, while their Field Artillery units were assigned across the fighting fronts. In battle, the introduction of both the 12-pdr. Napoleon and rifled cannon provided a range and power previously unknown on American soil. This book details the development and usage of this vital element in the warfighting capabilities of both sides.
