About This Item

London Book. Good. Soft cover. 1863, 16pp, removed from an unknown publication. Wrps. G. Robert John Walker, (1801-1869), born in Northumberland, Pennsylvania was a politician, lawyer, and economist. He served as a member of the U.S. Senate from Mississippi, as Secretary of the Treasury during the Polk administration, and as Territorial Governor of Kansas. Notwithstanding his former position in Mississippi as a senator and slave owner, he favored the Union cause during the Civil War and eventually freed some of his slaves. In his later years, he spent some time in London where he published a series of pamphlets, this being one of them, and practiced law in Washington, DC. This speech addresses the United Kingdom's concerns that America would suffer financially because of slavery. Also includes a short speech by William Evans of London, at the Cleveland , Ohio Banquet November 18, 1863, to celebrate the opening of the Atlantic and Great Western Railway. .
