About This Item

New York: Orange Judd & Company, 1852. Octavo (19 x 12.5 cm.), xii, 11-204, [8] pages. Advertisements. Illustrated. Stated "Second Edition" (see second preface, pp. x-xii); copyright and issued in the same year by C.M. Saxton, though all copies of 1852 issues we have seen contain the Preface to the Second Edition and the overlapping pagination. "Chorlton's guides to cultivation of European grapes under glass were based on his experience as gardener to J.C. Green, Esq. of Staten Island. Chorlton gives a long list of European grapes suitable for indoor cultivation and suggests the American varieties isabella, catawba, diana and concord for outdoors. This was a very popular treatise and there were numerous subsequent and revised editions." In publisher's gilt-titled, burgundy cloth, with a bit of edgewear; otherwise fine. A handsome copy, and scarce thus. Small ink ownership signature to preliminary blank. [Gabler G15820; Noling, page 105 (later edition)].
