About This Item
San Francisco: Olema Press, 1984. Hardcover. Two volumes. [American slavery ..., vii, 345p; Notes ..., v, 862,], original cloth binding, vol. 1 is ex library with the usual markings, vol. 2 is a bit edge worn but with no library markings. Olshausen, a radical San Francisco lawyer, spent much of his life working on this history of American slavery, focusing on jurisprudential questions. He took the manuscript with him when he emigrated to Yugoslavia in the 1960s; five of its six chapters, along with the notes that form a separate volume, were recovered after his death in 1978. The five chapters published here carry the history through the Compromise of 1850; the footnotes are found in the companion volume.
