An author's presentation copy of a very scarce complete set of The Americans at Home; Or, Byeways, Backwood, and Prairies signed to front free endpapers to all. Edited by Thomas Chandler Haliburton. First edition. In three volumes complete. With half titles to all volumes. 'This work was designed as a companion to Traits of American Humour the sketches it contains are confined, as expressed in the title-page, to the Byeways, Backwoods and Prairies. [as] The large cities and vast rivers and railroads of the United States are not only well known to all tourists but to the reading public generally.' Thomas Chandler Haliburton (1796 - 1865) was a politician, judge, and author in the British Colony of Nova Scotia. He was the first international best-selling author from what is now Canada and played a significant role in the history of Nova Scotia prior to its entry into Confederation. Previous owner's ink inscriptions to front free endpapers dated 1882. In cloth bindings. Externally, sound but with some wear to extremities, slight marginal fading and occasional marks to boards, splitting to cloth to joints, one starting, backstrip lifting slightly to one volume. Two hinges strained, one slightly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound, slightly strained in places to second volume. Bright but with handling marks and occasional spots. Good
