About This Item

[LGBTQ] [Literature] Taylor, Bayard. Joseph and His Friend: A Story of Pennsylvania. New York: G. P. Putnam & Sons. First Edition Hardcover, 1870. 375 pages. Measures 5.25" x 7.5". Joseph and His Friend: A Story of Pennsylvania, is a novel written by Bayard Taylor, published in 1870. It's one of the earliest American novels with a homosexual theme, exploring the deep friendship between two men, Joseph Atherley and Roger Bascombe, in rural Pennsylvania during the mid-19th century. The book is significant for its portrayal of same-sex relationships within the constraints of its historical context. It presented a special attachment between two men and discussed the nature and significance of such a relationship, romantic but not sexual. Critic John Hallock has referred to it in several papers as "America's first homosexual novel." Copy has publisher's original gilt lettered purple cloth covered boards. Some slight rubbing and wear, damage to top and bottom of spine, previous owner's inscription, overall in very good condition.
