About This Item

Golden Valley, Minnesota: Highland Publishers. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1980. First Edition. Hardcover. Hardcover. Highland Publishers. 1110 pages. Book is in FINE condition. Dust jacket has just faint hint of rubbing, else FINE also. This copy is from the Personal Library of Peter Paul Martinek, who was awarded the Navy Cross. Peter Paul Martinek, U. S. N. Citation: Navy CrossWar: World War II Peter Paul Martinek, NC for heroism and courageous devotion to duty during the attack on the USS Marblehead by Japanese enemy bombers on February 10, 1942. Promptly upon the destruction of his station by a bomb explosion, Martinek, already sprinkled with powder, entered the wrecked and burning quarters for Chief Petty Officers, and despite complete darkness and smoke, removed exposed powder in the path of the fire, disposing of it over the side. Furthermore, he displayed initiative and skill in the fighting of fires and rescuing of the wounded. These qualities together with an utter disregard for his own personal safety contributed greatly to the saving of the ship for further war service and the saving of many lives. Mr. Martinek was the Legion of Valor National Commander 1955-1956. He resided in Arizona. One of many military books we have acquired from his personal library. Wonderful collection of scarce and rare titles. ; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; 1110 pages .
