London : Chapman and Hall, 1856. Cloth. Very Good. 10.5" by 6.5". None. An historical work on artistic styles. Being an outline of a course of sixteen lectures originally prepared for the government schools of design in the years 1848, 1849 and 1850. This work discusses the styles of ornamental art through the ages, and focuses on ornament in general, greek ornament, egyptian ornament and much more. Illustrated throughout with numerous plates and vignettes. Written by Ralph Nicholson Wornum, an English artist and art historian. He was the Keeper and Secretary of London's National Gallery from 1855 until his death. In a full cloth binding with gilt stamping to the front board and spine. Externally, generally smart with bumping to the head and tail of spine as well as to the extremities. Boards have faded slightly. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, Peter Foster, Harcourt, Hemingford Grey. Prior owner's signature to the recto of front endpaper, Lizzie May. Institutional blind stamp to the title page, Department of Science and Art Reward. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot throughout. Very Good
