Bruxelles [Brussels]: Société pour l'Émancipation Intellectuelle, [1853?]. First Edition. First printing. 12mo (19cm). Three volumes in original paper wrappers, with ornate designs in blue and black to both covers; vol. I: 96pp, vol. II: [iv],[97]-196; vol. III: [iv], 197-348pp; frontispiece in each volume, numerous in-text wood engravings. House in modern archival cream clamshell case, with the bookplate of James Glen Mead. A bright set, largely sound, though with the first few gatherings of volume 3 neatly detached; gentle external rubbing and wear, creases and minor losses to spines, vol. 3 spine largely perished; neat numerals in pink ink on upper covers, but overall Very Good.

Van Beneden (1809-1894) was a distinguished zoologist and professor at the Catholic University of Leuven, best known for his research on parasitic worms and marine biology.
