About This Item

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd, 1920. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". Albert Morrow. The first edition in a scarce variant binding of H. Rider Haggard's adventure novel, with illustrations by Albert Morrow. The first edition in a scarce variant publisher's cloth binding, with the illustration of the seal to the verso of the list of illustrations and the list of Haggard's works, as expected to the first edition.  Illustrated by Albert Morrow with a monochrome frontispiece and seven monochrome plates. Collated complete. This work was written by the popular adventure fiction writer H. Rider Haggard, a pioneer of the 'lost world' literary genre. This work follows Allan Quartermain and Lady Ragnall as they inhale taduki, a fictional drug that induces visions of previous incarnations, causing Quartermain to relive the experiences of ancient Egyptian aristocrat Shabaka. In the publisher's original cloth variant binding. Externally smart with fading to the spine, creasing to the spine, bumping and rubbing to the extremities with small closed tears to the head and tail of the spine, minor marks to the boards and closed tears to the joints with joints starting. Light offsetting to the front free endpaper with light cockling and slight ink marks to the rear and rear hinge tender. Internally firmly bound with lightly age toned pages with light spotting throughout. Very Good

Synopsis

Now I, Allan Quatermain, come to the weirdest (with one or two exceptions perhaps) of all the experiences which it has amused me to employ my idle hours in recording here in a strange land, for after all England is strange to me. I grow elderly. I have, as I suppose, passed the period of enterprise and adventure and I should be well satisfied with the lot that Fate has given to my unworthy self.
