Etched frontispiece by and after Carter, and 106 etched plates. Originally issued in 27 parts, 'this is Carter's most important book... It was probably the first [work] to analyze the morphological development of English Gothic (or, as Carter insisted, ''the Pointed Arch style'') on a systematic comparative basis - something acknowledged by Britton in a tribute to Carter as ''the first to point out to the public the right way of delineating the component and detached parts of the old buildings of England'' Two volumes in one.
