"Lowland Maya sculpture, which undrwent spectacular developments during the first millennium AD, constitures one of the great art styles of ancient America. Complexities of style, degrees of wethering, and problems of effective field photography make many of the Maya monuments difficult to appreciate or study in satisfactory detail. The intricate carving of the magnificent sarcophagus from the Tomb of the Inscriptions at Palenque is a case in point. The photographs of the sarcophagus sculptures are inevitable cramped, limited by the conditions within the tomb chamber; Merle Greene, however, working long hours in ankle-deep water dripping from above, made rubbings of these sculptures which are remarkably free of distortion." from the foreword by Robert L. Rands. In a Very Good + Slipcase with lightly age-toned edges. Age-toned spine and lightly age-toned wrapper edges near spine, else, Pristine, no wear. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Heavy card covers..
