About This Item

New York: Daniel Dana, 1855. First edition. 3/4 leather. Very Good. 4 3/4 x 6 5/8 inches. x + [2] + 94. Title page in red and black. Bound with: The Psalter Noted, London: Novello and Co., 1855. [2] + 245 numbered pages. Bound in 3/4 black calf which is worn and scuffed. Rebacked with original spine and gilt title relaid and endpapers renewed. Thomas Helmore, 1811 - 1890, was a teacher and choirmaster. Helmore's publications reflect his belief that plainsong was the perfect form of congregational singing, and include the Psalter Noted (1849), the Manual of Plainsong (1850), and the Hymnal Noted (1851), a collection of plainsong melodies with translations of the original texts by J. M. Neale (with whom Helmore also collaborated in two collections of carols). Helmore became the recognized authority on plainsong in Anglican circles. ODNB. A very good clean and complete copy of these two scarce works.
