About This Item

London: John W. Parker and Son, 1857. Hardcover. Good. 252 p. 17 cm. Cloth hardcover. Spine faded and cracked at top and bottom, some wear to label. Corners bumped, small dents in fore-edges. Pages generally clean.

An early collection of ballads and poems assembled from the oral traditions of the peasantry, expanding on the work of James Henry Dixon which was released to a limited audience 11 years earlier. Seventy-five entries are recorded, among them highly amusing tales of cuckoldry, sad laments of lost love, and working songs to accompany sowing and harvesting.
