About This Item

London: Leigh And Sotheby, 1808. First edition. leather_bound. Contemporary three quarter brown morocco and marbled boards. Very good. 327 pages. 4to, 29 x 23 cm. Two lithographs by Gainsborough, one in color, and a host of engravings. Index of the Names of the Painters. The author, an historical painter was employed by Boydell to make drawings from the old masters for his publications, and the Society of Antiquaries for the same purpose. "He published in 1808 (this title), intended as a supplement to Walpole; but in his facts he was too accurate to please his contemporaries, and consequently the work and its author were much decried." [see: BRYAN Vol.II, p.120]. Some age-toning, mostly in the margins, bookplate, boards slightly crinkled, modest rubbing to extremities.
