About This Item

Harper & Row 1964, Stated First. VG/VG Bright green boards with gilt titles. DJ has chips along edges, spine and corners, author's name on spine is partially whited out. Po's stamp on upper corner of first page and bottom of book. No other marks, clean. B&W photos of villagers. Map of Taiwan on back end papers. This is the amazing story of Lillian Dickson, a small, human dynamo of a woman who is achieving astounding results from her work among the natives of the mysterious island of Formosa. Upon arrival in 1927 she found that leprosy, headhunting, tuberculosis, the selling of little girls into prostitution and government corruption were all being taken for granted. She looked at the sea of suffering and said, "I'm going to take out my bucketfull".
