First Edition. An account of the reign of Christian III [1503-59], King of Denmark. Christian was proclaimed King in 1533 soon after the death of his father, Frederick I. Under his direction, a church ordinance based on the canons of Luther, Melanchthon and Bugenhagen, was promulgated in 1537, and in 1542, the position of the reformed Danish Church was consolidated by the Articles of Ribe. The increased revenue derived from the appropriation of Church property was a major factor in Denmark’s emergence as the leading Scandinavian power during the latter part of Christian III’s reign.
