Butler, Samuel. "Hudibras. The First Part. Written in the time of the late Wars". [4], 268 pages. First Authorized Edition, first issue, with "Saint" in imprint spelled out in full; errata is present, lacking the imprimatur leaf (dated Nov. 11, 1662), and all textual errors uncorrected. London: Printed by J.G. for Richard Marriot, 1663. [bound with] "Hudibras. The Second Part. By the Author of the First". [4], 216 pages. Also, third part dated 1678. Bound in exceptionally fine binding and in very good condition with the bookplates of Daniel Henry Holmes, an avid book collector. This edition certainly is one of the rarest being that it is a first issue. A pirate copy came out the year before in 1662 and all proceeds from the sale of the book by the thief were recovered by Butler. Collation is as follows: [2 blank], TP, A3-8, B8-I8, K-R8, 2nd TP, B-I8, K-O8, P4, 3rd TP, A-I8, K-R8, S7, [2 Blank].Hudibras by Samuel Butler is a critique of the English Civil War and pokes at the Puritans and their military…

London: Printed for R. Chilwell at the Rose and Crown in St Paul's Churchyard, and R. Bentley in Russel-Street in Covent-Garden, 1689. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Sm 4to (20cm). Rebound in later black faux leather, with new endpapers, five raised bands to spine, gilt title, 'Infallible Guide', to cover, and date, 1689. pp. [i], title, [iv], imprimatur, [v-vi], contents, 132. A scarce copy of Hooper's second work, an apologetic in defence of the Anglican Church. Hooper had a more than accomplished academic record, being elected a scholar at St Paul's School, and subsequently granted a King's Scholarship at Westminster School. At Oxford he excelled in mathematics, while also learning good Hebrew and Syriac alongside Greek and Latin. In 1680 he was appointed chaplain to King Charles II. Subsequently made Bishop of Bath and Wells from 1704 to 1727. All of Hooper's works were published anonymously. The text of this states there are three discourses, but the book contains only two discourses; the…

Description:
London: Printed for Henry Herringman, and sold by Jacob Tonson, 1688. Later marbled hardback boards, with buckram spine. No titles. Boards are a little rubbed but sound. Contains reprints of Three of Dryden's poems. All three poems have separate title pages (all dated 1688). A example of Dryden's publisher's issuance of volumes made up from various separate printings of his poems. (according to Worldcat). Probably missing A1 (Blank end paper). So our copy begins with the Title page. Binding falls open to the title page (although secure). Pages are slightly darkened, and have minor flaws to the edges. Overall a decent copy of a scarce collection of works (No copies of any of the poems printed before 1800 are available at the time of listing). No rear end paper, so book ends with page 116. The printing of the title page of the Panegyrick is particularly dark, and has bled through to the verso. Despite the poem's name (Annus Mirabilis), 1666 had been one of great tragedy, including the Great Fire…
