About This Item

Washington, Pa.: Printed at the Reporter and Tribune Office, 1862. First edition. 24pp. 9 x 5½ inches. Pamphlet; removed; soil to wrappers; heavy age-staining, but all legible; small stab holes. Fair condition.

Scarce anti-slavery sermon directed to the senior class of 1862 and given by John W. Scott, president of this small Presbyterian college located near Pittsburgh. Scott is described as "fervent, even radical, abolitionist."¹

The Civil War-time sermon quickly moves to the topic of slavery: "The most prominent cause of the present state of things in our land, in my view, is American Slavery... For these reasons I propose to confine your attention, on the present occasion, to a consideration of, THE NATURE OF SLAVERY; ITS INFLUENCE IN BRINGING ABOUT THE PRESENT EVIL TIMES IN OUR BELOVED COUNTRY..." (p7).

Scott discusses the morality of slavery, the views on the subject by Thomas Jefferson, the "approaching exodus of the colored race" (African colonization), and the strained political relations between North and South.
