About This Item

Gettysburg, PA: Thomas Publications, 1978 Thomas Publications, Gettysburg, PA. 1978. First Edition. Book is tight, square, and unmarked but for date stamp on half title page of the Antietam National Battlefield. Book Condition: Near Fine. No DJ. Pictorial Wraps. Wraps are not bent or folded but there is a small crease on the front corner tip; spine is slightly creased but not split. 304 pp 4to. The author has captured the personal tragedy of the Civil War battlefield at Antietam in this collection of photographs by photographers Alexander Gardner and James F. Gibson. The author recreates the battle scene by documenting the dates and camera location for each view, providing a definitive report on the photographs that highlights Antietam's role as a landmark in the visual documentation of the war. 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia's first invasion into the North and led Abraham Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. A clean very presentable copy.
