Only a few copies recorded in the USA and Europe and very few auction records, none more recent than 1980. Cochlaeus was a German humanist, controversialist, and opponent of the Reformation. He was, at first, supportive of England's Henry VIII but became appalled by Henry's "lawless passion" and then by Henry's execution of his friends Thomas More and John Fisher. Cochlaeus compiled this work which includes the decretals of 9th century Pope Nicholas to the Byzantine emperor Michael as a warning and lesson to Henry. The volume is especially interesting because it contains an account of Thomas More's execution along with his epitaph and several letters written by More to Erasmus. It is also interesting as an early European defense of More and Bishop Fisher. The printer is Melchior Lotter, the younger, (d. 1542) a member of a well-known German family of printers. His father is said to be the first German printer to use Roman type for Latin works, which tradition the son continued here, reserving the German fraktur for headers. Melchior the younger printed Luther's Bible and, working in Wittenberg, printed Melanchthon's works in Greek; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 220 pages .
