About This Item

London: G and W. B. Whittaker, 1823. Book. Fair. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Rare. Only copy for sale on the internet. Original publisher's drab binding, the front board is detached, and the back board's hinge is split and attached only by cords. The paper on the spine is chipped. The main body of text is present, but it lacks one leaf of publisher's ads at the rear. All five folding plates are present (one frontispiece and four bound to the rear). There is a stain on the back board. The title page has a brown impression from the frontispiece. However, the text block is secure, and the pages are mostly clean with occasional spotting. George Oliver (1782-1867) was a prominent English clergyman and a prolific Masonic author. He was not only a Freemason himself but also a respected historian and scholar within the Masonic community. His work on "The Antiquities of Free-Masonry" showcases his dedication to preserving the history and traditions of the Masonic fraternity. The book was first published in 1823. It has since become a valuable resource for Masons and Masonic historians interested in the origins and development of Freemasonry..
