Presumed first edition, first printing. MDCCCXIV shown on title page and no other dates provided. The book is in excellent condition overall. Wear at top and bottom of spine cover corners, some marks on the inside front cover (stamp of name and address) and first fly leaf (pencil marks and boll seller's sticker and name and address stamped on edges of pages - visible when book is closed. Lettering on the cover spine is a bit faded and darkened near bottom. Otherwise, we could not find any significant faults. Pages are all clear, without foxing, tears or marks although age toned at edges; The fold-out map and chart are in 'like new' condition. Binding is tight.
Appears to be a serious work on Indian antiquities with map and many illustrations. Also a detailed 43 page index.
From Wikipedia (abridged): "Lionel David Barnett CBFBA (21 October 1871 – 28 January 1960) was an English orientalist. ...In 1899, he joined the British Museum as Assistant Keeper in the Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts. In 1908 he became Keeper, remaining in the post until his retirement in 1936. He was also Professor of Sanskrit at University College, London from 1906 to 1917, founding Lecturer in Sanskrit at the School of Oriental Studies (1917–1948), Lecturer in Ancient Indian History and Epigraphy (1922–1948), and Librarian of the School (1940–1947).
