London, England: S. Hooper, 1794. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Title pages of Volume I and Volume II are dated 1791; preface to Volume I is dated 1794. Royal octavo. Boards measure 10.8 in x 8.2 in.; leaves measure 10.4 in. x 7.3 in. Plates unpaginated. Volume I: pp. xl, [13], 88 + 135 plates; Volume II: pp. xv, [3], 98 + 125 plates. 260 total plates. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Gilt title and band lines, and four raised bands, to rebacked spines. Marbled edges. Rubbing and scuffing to extremities and marbled boards (see photos). Marbled endpapers. Light foxing to endpapers, half titles, and title pages. Occasional very light foxing throughout both volumes. Previous owner's heraldic bookplate to front pastedowns. Note: boards extend nearly one inch beyond the leaves on the fore-edge.
Francis Grose (1731-91) published the 18th century's most extensive series of illustrations of ancient monuments. A thousand plates with accompanying descriptions, based on his and others' views and researches, appeared in the 10 volumes of The Antiquities of England and Wales (1772-76,), Scotland (1789-91) and Ireland (1791-95).
