About This Item

The First UK printing published by Jonathan Cape, London in 1924. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Light pushing at the spine ends. Small area of splitting at the lower rear spine fold. Light offsetting to the blank end-papers. Light toning and spotting to the text-block with a little spotting in places throughout due to the quality of paper stock used. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good+ condition. A little edge-wear with small losses at the upper spine end and front upper edge. Some nicks, light creasing and rubbing in places. A 5cm closed tear to the upper front panel. Some toning to the spine but the Theyre Lee-Elliot wrapper artwork remains striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Three line drawings by T. H. Robinson (brother of Heath Robinson). The book has been signed and inscribed by the author in the year of publication to the front blank end-paper : ' R. Wherry Anderson Esq, with the author's best regards, London, N. Lib. Club, 17/V11 '24' (presumably referring to the National Liberal Club). The recipient, Robert Wherry Anderson was a journalist and political activist. 'Fantasy satire in the tradition of Swift that chronicles the rise and fall of a mighty Ant Race that flourished in Central Africa in prehistoric times whose civilization is destroyed by the great Ant World-War. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 83. Bleiler (1948), p. 114. Reginald 05366. The book is dedicated to Horace Donisthorpe, who was 'an eccentric British myrmecologist and coleopterist, memorable in part for his enthusiastic championing of the renaming of the genus Lasius after him as Donisthorpea, and for his many claims of discovering new species of beetles and ants' (Wiki). A scarce title with such attributes. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
