About This Item
New York: The Viking Press, 1932. First American edition. 8vo, original black cloth, lettered on the upper cover and spine in gilt. 200pp. Internally a fine copy, the black cloth mellowed a bit. “Apocalypse is D.H. Lawrence‘s last book, written during the winter of 1929–30 when he was dying. It is a radical criticism of our civilization and a statement of Lawrence’s unwavering belief in man’s power to create ‘a new heaven and a new earth’. Ranging over the entire system of his thought on God and man, on religion, art, psychology and politics, this book is Lawrence’s final attempt to convey his vision of man and the universe. Apocalypse was published after
Lawrence’s death” - From a later paperback edition.
The work discusses much the separation of modern civilized peoples from the natural work and the breaking of our “link” with nature. This philosophy would be much repeated throughout the decades to come and in many ways this could be argued as his most relevant work to modern readers.
