About This Item

London: Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts and Green, 1864. First edition. Cloth. Good. 9" by 6". Not Stated. The first edition in book form of Newman's spiritual and theological defences against Charles Kinglsley and the Church of England. This work is a collection of letters between the author Charles Kingsley, and the Catholic priest John Henry Newman. Kingsley argued with Newman about Roman Catholicism, accusing Newman of being untruthful and deceitful. This accusation led Newman to publish his 'Apologia Pro Vita Sua', a biographical defence of his religious opinions.Initially issues in eight parts in the same year, Newman's work forms an intriguing, spiritual and autobiographical defence to Kingsley's attacks. The book was an immediate best seller, and remains in print to this day.Rebacked in the original cloth. Rebacked in the original cloth. Externally, some shelf wear to the boards, and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Both boards are lifting to the head. Internally, hinges have been reinforced and binding is firm. A few light pencil inscriptions and the odd spot to some pages, otherwise pages are generally clean. Good
