About This Item

London: Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts, and Green, 1864. ~Original grey-brown straight-grained cloth, blind frames and decor to boards, gilt lettering to spine. Discreetly rebacked in near-matching cloth with original backstrip laid down. A little loss to gilt lettering and ruling on original backstrip. Very mild fading to spine and to boards near edges. 8vo (15.8 x 23.3cm). Hinges sound. Original brown endpapers unobtrusively repaired / reinforced at gutters. Endpapers rubbed and with tears neatly repaired to verso. Small bookplate to inside front board. Old owner's signatures to front endpage. This is the first edition of Newman's Apologia, his reply to Charles Kingsley's pamphlets attacking his integrity and that of the Catholic Church. An immediate bestseller and almost universally favourably received, the Apologia was a 'turning point' in Newman's life, 'his second significant contribution to a theology of the church' (ODNB), and remains in print today. First edition in original binding. ~Robust packaging. Overseas orders trackable on request. . 1st edn. Hardback. Very Good+. 430, 127pp. Binding sound, text unmarked.
