Washinton, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1903. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Important 891 page U.S. Government document regarding the Pious Fund for California Missions. Text in English, Spanish and French. 1903. First edition, Book is 9.25 inches in height by 6.00 inches in width, publisher's black cloth with red title labels to spine, , boards show light wear and bumps to a couple of corners, spine a little faded as well, titles still bright and legible. No previous owner name or writing. This volume contains the documents submitted by the U.S. in their Hague Tribunal case against Mexico in the matter of the Pious Fund of the Californias. The fund was established in the 18th century to aid the Franciscan Missions in Baja and Alta california. In 1842, Mexican President Santa Anna sequestered the funds with a promise to pay the interest which he did until California was ceded to the united States at the end of the Mexican War in 1842. The international tribunal ruled that Mexico owed nearly $1.5 million dollars. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
