First U.K. edition, first edition overall with laid in letter signed by the author to his U.S. publisher regarding the book. In original unclipped jacket in clear protective sheet and a price of "7/6 net" on spine. Very slight creasing at edges and small chipping at head and tail of spine, otherwise fine. Blue cloth over boards with darker blue lettering to spine. Head and tail of spine slightly bumped, otherwise fine. Interior is clean, clear, and with a tight spine; pages evenly and lightly toned.
Laid in letter from the author, J. I. M. Stewart (pseudonym, Michael Innes). Dated 20 March 1941, and on The University Adelaide paper where J. I. M. Stewart was the Jury Professor of English at the time. The letter is addressed to Mr. Frank Dodd of Dodd Meade publishers in New York - the author's American publisher - and remarks on the speed at which his British publisher requested the manuscript be sent and a brief statement about the author's thoughts on the book and its best scene ["Achtung!"].
