About This Item

Albany: J.B. Lyon Company, 1905.. [2],xx,409,[3]pp. including nine in text figures, plus forty-one half-tone plates, and eighty-seven full color plates. Frontis. Original dark green cloth, spine and front board stamped in gilt. Very minor shelf wear. Internally clean, bright, and unmarked. Near fine. First volume only of this lavishly illustrated text. Spencer Ambrose Beach was an American botanist and founding member of the American Society for Horticultural Science, and was part of the New York Agricultural Experiment Station at the turn of the 20th century. The text begins with a brief historical survey of apple cultivation in the state of New York, but is primarily concerned with individual descriptions of every variety of apple which can be grown there. For each apple the author provides a brief summary of its traits (including his opinions on their culinary uses and taste) and a historical note on its introduction. More than one hundred varieties of apple are depicted in the extensive half-tone and full- color plates in this volume. An excellent copy of a beautifully illustrated book.
