About This Item

Winnipeg: Historic Resources Branch, (1983). Paper bound, large quarto, illustrated throughout, Pp189. Includes bibliography. Minor crease to top corner of front cover else a tight and unmarked, very good or better copy. 550 grams. From the Introduction: ""The Brandon and Area Planning district was formed on 23 January 1980 by an Oder-in-Council and was signed into law by Lieutenant-Governor F.J. Jobin. A board, which is responsible for the development of the planning district is supplied with a variety of reports upon which to base future planning decisions. These reports include among others land use, agricultural, rural population, rural transportation, groundwater resources, wildlife and economic base studies. A heritage report was also prepared by the Historic Resources Branch of Manitoba Culture, Heritage and Recreation for the Brandon and Area Planning District. While this study provides a valuable assessment of the historical heritage within the planning district, it is limited by the secondary sources upon which it is based. Moreover, the architectural history of the rural areas is not well documented. It is for this reason than an extensive investigation of the planning district's rural building heritage was begun. The architectural heritage of the City of Brandon was outlined in 'Brandon: An Architectural Walking Tour' also prepared by the Historic Resaources Branch. Through a methodical process, which included an historical buildings analysis and the compilation of a selected building inventory, the early architectural heritage of rural Elton-Cornwallis was thoroughly researched. Contents include: A: Rural Residential Structures: Initial Structures (1878-1900); Small Rectangular Planned Houses (1880-1015); and Large Square Planned Houses (1900-1920); B: Barns: Initial Structures (1878-1890); Early Frame Barns (1880-1900); Southern Ontario Style Barns (1880-1920); Barn Transitions (1900-1930); and Plank-Framed Barns (1900-1940); C: Other Farm Buildings: Granaries and Elevators; Equipment Sheds; chicken Coops; Root Cellars and Outhouses; D: Public and Commercial Buildings: Churches; Community Halls; Schools; Stores; Railroad Buildings. Selected Inventory section and Bibliography at end.
