About This Item
Chicago: University Of Chicago Press, 1994. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. A tight clean first edition/printing, no inscription/markings in the interi or, ex-lib; This scholarly title critically assesses the careers, work, and patronage of Alexander Wadworth Longfellow and Frank Ellis Alden, both former employees of H.H. Richardson, and Alfred Branch Harlow, who had been associated with McKim, Mead and White. Working primarily in western Pennsylvania and New England, these three architects enjoyed prolific careers from 1886 until the 1920s, completing a wide range of commissions from residences to institutions and commercial buildings. By placing the three architects in a broader context of American architectural and landscape history, Floyd (Architectural Education and Boston, Boston Architectural Ctr., 1989) uncovers strong cultural affinities between Boston and Pittsburgh. Numerous illustrations provide fascinating glimpses of turn-of-the-century American architecture; an appendix lists all known commissions by the three architects.
