West Baden Springs, Indiana: The Artist, 1976. ( 1976-1980 ) West Baden Springs, Indiana. 30 works ranging in size from 10" x 13" down to 3 1/2" x 5", 10 of the works individual watercolor, tempura, and ink paintings and 20 original watercolor, tempura and inks done as note cards. All SIGNED Lois A. Doane. Generally Near Fine or better. Along with an 8 1/2" x 11 1/2" card stock mounted with her portrait photo and a pricelist for her exhibition at the Monroe County Public Library, Bloomington, Indiana, Nov. 7-27, 1976, and a mailer for another show she had at the Old Library, sponsored by the Bloomington Area Arts Council, Oct. 5-26, 1980. Lois A. Doane was born in 1894 in what was called the "Quaker Community" near West Baden Springs, Indiana. Self-taught, she often sold her works to the tourists who flocked to the historic West Baden Springs Resort Hotel. Subject matter ranges from portrait to landscape to fantasy. Always colorful and charming, of particular interest is one 10" x 13" tempura and India ink titled "Don't Cry Pretty Child You Are White". She also worked in batik, having taught herself that technique before the Great Depression of the 1930's. A wonderful assortment of works of a unique outsider artist who painted the subject matter available to a small-town Indiana girl. . SIGNED BY ARTIST. Unbound. Near Fine.
