Hardback octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), black & white photos & drawings, frontispiece (reverse side lightly foxed), pages lightly toned, minor edgewear jacket, light foxing endpapers & edges. 123 pp. The author was the Director of the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge for the seven years 1949 - 1956. This book is both a second edition and a successor to the author's "Arctic and Antarctic: the Technique of Polar Travel" published in 1939. In this book he carries forward his earlier discussions and descriptions of the "pioneer" and "transitional" stages in polar history and affairs into the postwar "modern" phase.
