Philadelphia: Childs & Peterson, 1856 Volume 1 of 2 only. Not a record of the scientific nature of the Second Grinnell Expedition, but rather a recounting of the more adventurous elements of that expedition, meant for reading by the general public. Includes a fold-out at the Preface, and numerous steel engravings, some in-page and some full page hors texte w/ tissue guards. Condition notes - 464 numbered pp; HB. Pages: clean, ivory, tight, portrait frontis w/ tissue guard; a.e. well sunned/foxed, period gift inscription dated 1888 inked to ffep, both hinges tape reinforced. Cover: marbles boards w/ leather backstrip and tips, 4 raised bands (3 remain) gilt titles spine; substantial shelfwear, w/ extrems worn through, joints split w/ prior tape marks, lacks lower 2.5 inches of spine covering. Internals great, exterior rough.
