Viii + 152pp. Green cloth, gilt lettering on spine; rebound in 1977 as stated in pen by owner on (new) end paper. Writing crossed out on half title. Frontispiece lithograph, fold-out map with hand-colored route, bound in opposite copyright page. Occasional minor foxing; fore edge bumped resulting in light creases and bends to several pages. One of the first books about the search for Franklin and his crew, which included the author's brother. Narration about whaling, Arctic landscape, polar bears, Eskimos and more..

Minor wear to extremities. Two bookplates on front endpapers, embossed institutional blind stamp on titlepage. Internally clean. Good plus. Narrative of the author's eight-month journey in search of his brother, who had sailed with Sir John Franklin on his final (and fateful) expedition. Goodsir, a medical doctor and lately the president of the Royal Medical Society of Edinburgh, sailed twice to the Arctic in search of his brother, Harry, who was assistant surgeon and naturalist to the Franklin Expedition. This work recounts his first such journey. Extracted from the author's journal, the tale includes interactions with Eskimos, an excursion to hunt polar bears, and a whale hunt, as well as a thorough description of Arctic scenery, wildlife, and landscape, with which the author was quite smitten. Edges and sides of boards stamped with rolled gilt design; gilt lettering and designs stamped to spine with five raised bands. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled to match. One tinted plate and a folding map with the route outlined in red. Previous owner's notation to the title page. A very good, tight and clean copy. AB 5919. Narrative of a voyage, undertaken in 1849, in search of the author's brother Harry, surgeon on the missing Franklin expedition, based on extracts from a rough journal. With whaling Captain Penny onboard the 'Advice' they searched Lancaster Sound and give a good description of the region, ice conditions, the birds observed,and whaling processes, etc. Goodsir would also accompany Penny on his second search attempt aboard the 'Lady Franklin'. A very scarce title. 1850
