The recent translation of a Babylonian tablet launches a groundbreaking investigation into one of the most famous stories in the world, challenging the way we look at ancient history.

He is the curator in charge of cuneiform inscriptions on tablets of clay from ancient Mesopotamia, of which the Middle East Department has the largest collection of any modern museum.

Reviews

On Aug 29 2014, a reader said:
You wouldn't think discussing Cuneiform tablets would be interesting but Mr. Finkel makes it sound like the the most interesting job in the world when you start playing detective with what is written on these tablets. He traces the story of the flood and the building of "the ark" to the earliest known mention in written language and found the ark in this story was round. Actually a large Coracle, like the ones that were used in the Middle East to navigate the local rivers and carry everything, including livestock. It is not a scholarly work written just for archeologists so even a layperson with no previous knowledge of the field can read and enjoy, which is what I did. I found it fascinating as it relates to history and the Jewish bible. There are four appendices, notes, a bibliography and an index so it also works as a reference work for those interested in delving deeper into the subject or for those already in this field of endeavor.
