The author, Dr Peter Charanis, was then Professor of History at Rutgers University and his work is an introductory study in Byzantine ethnography, specifically a consideration of the role played in the government and general management, and including the intellectual life and martial activity, of the Byzantine Empire by those partially or wholle of Armenian lineage.
