About This Item

Not listed, 1890. Folio (16 1/2 x 15"); in the publisher's black quarter morocco binding over cloth with titling in gilt to the upper board, and black calf labels to the spine; 71 pages, followed by 44 chromolithographic plates printed on textured paper; some of the plates have quite small remnants of tissue guard where the tissue adhered to the chromo; a couple of plates are lacking the tissue guards; all of the plates have vivid and attractive color; the binding is a bit shaken, with the hinge cracked between the front endpaper and the first blank leaf; the binding is holding well however, and all of the stubbed in plates are well attached, even those which are lacking their tissue guard; the front joint is separating for the bottom inch or two but, again, is holding.~~This is the first of what was to be two volumes, each volume with plates by artist Henry Alexander Ogden; Ogden originally had planned American Army uniforms from 1890 to 1906. Quartermaster General Ludington urged him to expand the undertaking to included all of the nation's military uniforms since the founding -- thus this volume, covering 1774 to 1889. Each of the 44 prints features five different ranks, therefore five different uniforms [see great-republic.com].
