About This Item

LANES, Selma G. The Art of Maurice Sendak. NY: Harry N. Abrams [1980]. Square 4to, 278pp. Color pictorial boards. Orange endpapers; b&w and color illustrations throughout. A fine copy in original glassine dust jacket. Inscribed by the artist, Maurice Sendak with a drawing of Mozart!

First edition. While Sendak would draw pictures of his characters for friends, it is very rare to find a drawing of his beloved Mozart! This copy of The Art of Maurice Sendak features a wonderful, roughly four-inch square drawing of the musical genius, standing atop a cloud (apparently in heaven)! A gorgeous compendium of Sendak's work featuring two stunning gate-fold illustrations and a pop-up – features which were dropped from all subsequent printings after the first.
