About This Item

New York: Alfred A Knopf, 1951. . This is a book on the methods of teaching. It does not discuss the subjects which are taught (or should be taught) in schools, in colleges, and elsewhere. The author, a great teacher reared in classical and humanist traditions, believes that teaching is an art, not a science. It is a wise and humane book, inspirational and useful in the best sense. The contents cover: Introduction... The Teacher... The Teacher's Methods... Great Teachers and the Pupils... Teaching in everday life. Notes and index supplied. Scotland-born author lectured in Classics at Oxford and then came to Columbis University, NY where he was Anthon Professor of Latin Language and Literature. He was awarded a 1950 Guggenheim Fellowship to do a study on Juvenal. Attractively designed black cloth boards. White-out used on ffep. Uneven topstain. This copy remains square, sound and serviceable.. Fifth Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/Poor.
