Previous owner's name label on the front endpaper. This book is based on a British Television Series called Arthur C. Clark's Mysterious Series. The subjects covered in this book are the result of many months of discussion between Simon Welfare, John Fairley and myself. During more than half a century of omnivorous and indiscriminate reading (as a school-boy, I ploughed through the Taunton Public Library at the rate of several volumes a day- a feat no longer possible in the TV age) I came across countless puzzles and mysteries that intrigued me. Many have now been solved; most have not, and it is from the remaining hard core that we selected the themes of our series. Once I had suggested them, Simon, John and their colleagues did the detailed research, and sent camera teams all over the world in search of relevant footage. It is our hope that all this effort may lead to solutions to some of these mysteries; but I think I speak for my friends when I say that I should hate to see them all well and truly settled. Not that there is much danger of this.
