About This Item

Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh, 1983. Very Good. Plastic comb binding, photocopy of 150 pages, printed on rectos only, with a few marks in pen or pencil throughout, unknown by whom, very good. The book was published two years later by MIT, no doubt with some revisions. Haugeland (d. 2010) was a longtime professor at Pitt on philosophy of mind and related topics and was one of the premier thinkers on the implications of artificial intelligence, which he suggests in this book, on p. 1, should better be called "synthetic intelligence," just as there are real diamonds and synthetic diamonds. No copies of this iteration in any institution, probably distributed to just a small circle of colleagues at Pitt.
