About This Item

New York.: Asia Publishing Co.. 1918.. Numerous maps and colour and black and white illustrations throughout all issues. Bound together in blue cloth covered boards, Andover Newton Theological Library 1931 library label pasted down on the upper paste down. Lacks the original wrappers and the August issue, but extremely clean and firm. 29 x 21cm. Very good. The Journal of the American Asiatic Association began in 1898, an American publication with the aim of promoting commerce and cultural exchange between the US and eastern Asia and Oceania. In 1917 Willard Straight, who had been involved in promoting American trade and investment in Korea and China since the turn of the century, and his wife, Dorothy Payne Whitney Straight, bought the magazine and renamed it Asia.

An editorial in the Journal explained: "The ignorance of our people in regard to the countries of the Far East is unquestionably a serious obstacle to the legitimate extension of American influence." Unsurprisingly, racist sentiments are prevalent throughout!

The April issues features striking illustrations of Boat-Life in Kashmir from the original lithigraphs of Brunhilde Chesney. Other articles in this bound collection include: Beyond the Great Wall of China - Olive Gilbreath; What Asia Thinks of Missionaries - Tyler Dennett; Can the Filipinos Protect Themselves - Carl Crow; Why Japan's Army will Not Fight in Europe - Adachi Kinnosuke; Japan's Menacing Birth-rate - Walter E. Weyl; Eight page pictorial essays - "Some Men of East Asia: From the Original Water-Colors by Willard Straight; "Gardens of North India: From the Original Lithographs by Brunhilde Chesney; The Kirghiz of the Steppes - E. Nelson Fell; The Coolie Ship - Olive Gilbreath (Chinese in France 1918); Emancipating the Women of Asia - Tyler Dennett. .
