"In these engravings Trevor Haddrell has been influenced especially by the monumental studies of natural forms by the early photographer, Karl Blossfeldt, and inspired also by the powerful wood engravings of Eric Ravilious, Clare Leighton and Gertrude Hermes, along with the work of the Japanese wood-block artists Hokusai and Hiroshige. 'They are,' he says, 'intended, first and foremost, to work as abstract designs in the language of black and white engravings rather than pedantic botanical studes.' ".
