About This Item

University of California, 1984. First Edition. Cloth. Fine/fine. Association copy. Inscribed on title page: "For Victor Cassidy -- I'm glad this introduced us. Mary Barnard, September 26, 1987." Barnard was a celebrated poet, biographer, and translator. Her tutelage under Ezra Pound and friendship with William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, and other luminaries comprise the bulk of this elegant, poetic memoir. Her 1958 translation of Sappho has never gone out of print. Victor M. Cassidy, to whom this copy is inscribed, is a retired art critic and journalist in Chicago, and evidently a friend or colleague of Ms. Barnard. This is a unique and sophisticated volume of one of the finest literary memoirs in the latter half of the 20th century.
