About This Item

Hammersmith: Eragny Press, 1903. Aucassin and Nicolette is a beloved medieval love story which tells the tale of the son of a Christian Count who falls in love with a Muslim captive. The two face many trials and tribulations together before succeeding in marrying one another. The fable is illustrated by Lucien Pissarro, son of renown impressionist Camille Pissarro, who ran the Eragny Press alongside his wife, Esther. Included in this book is a five-color wood-engraving by Lucien in frontispiece, borders and initial printed in red by Esther Pissarro after Lucien Pissarro.

It is a limited edition of 230 copies on Arches paper printed in Vale type, in original cover, with a repeated floral motif printed in light and dark green on beige background, and matching clamshell box with gray background. Unnumbered, uncut copy. It is also the last book printed in the Vale type at the Eragny Press. The following works were all printed in the Brook type, designed by Lucien Pissarro. Original cover soiled front and back, inside wood engraving in very good conditions, as well as the other pages, front and back endpaper soiled.
