Tape reinforcement to rear hinge of first volume. Previous owner's name in second volume. ; Two volumes. First volume: [2 (advertisements], [x], 284, 32 (advertisements) pages + portrait frontispiece. Page dimensions: 221 x 141mm. Second series: ix, [3], 271, [1], 32 (advertisements) pages. Page dimensions: 221 x 140mm. Both volumes: Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. "Auld Lang Syne" [first series] is a second edition from 1898. "Auld Lang Syne: Second Series: My Indian Friends" is a first edition from 1899. "What are you to do when you are sent away by your doctor for three or four weeks of perfect reast? You are made to promise that you will lie perfectly fallow, taken no books and allow no proofsheets to reach you." - from the Preface (first series). Autobiography of the linguist and Sanskrit scholar Friedrich Max Muller (1823-1900). Muller was born in Germany but lived most of his life in Britain.
